The Government is proposing a new telephone numbering system to help users more easily identify commercial calls and decide whether to answer them.
🔎 What changes are being proposed?
. Commercial calls will use nine-digit numbers beginning with the 400 prefix.
. Customer service calls must be made from authorised short numbers, toll-free numbers (800 and 900), or geographic numbers.
. Telecom operators will block calls that do not comply with the established numbering requirements once the system is fully operational.
📆 When does it come into force?
17 October 2026 is the scheduled date for the new numbering system to come into force.
In addition, the Customer Service Act (SAC) aims to strengthen user protection against fraudulent or unwanted commercial calls and SMS messages, reducing risks and inconvenience.
💡 What does this mean for businesses? Adapting to the regulations and reviewing customer communication procedures will be essential to ensure legal compliance.
